Smoking materials left in flower pot caused Taneytown deck fire, fire marshal says

A small fire Wednesday morning damaged part of a Taneytown home’s deck, according to an Office of the State Fire Marshal news release.

The five firefighters from the Taneytown volunteer fire company that responded at 6:05 a.m. to a home on the unit block of Reaverton Avenue found the fire out upon their arrival, according to the release.

An image accompanying the release shows portions of the deck board and side railing burned away — an estimated $500 in damage, per the release.

The fire was found to be an accident due to “smoking material being discarded into a flower pot,” according to the release.
