Local Christian outreach center The Shepherd’s Staff on Wednesday announced it would continue its three-decade coat drive tradition.
The 31st Call for Coats Program will be open Saturday, Sept. 22, through Friday, Nov. 16, a Shepherd’s Staff news release said.
Call for Coats aims to collect winter apparel and distribute the items to those who need them in Carroll County. Last year the initiative garnered some 3,000 donations, the release said.
The organization distributed the thousands of scarves, hats, gloves, thermal underwear and jackets to those in need.
“Our goal is to help keep local families and individuals warm during the cold winter months,” said Brenda Meadows, executive director of The Shepherd’s Staff, said in the release. “Coats and outwear items can be expensive and our hope is that those funds can be used towards other necessities like paying rent or other bills.”
Westminster’s Admiral Cleaners is co-sponsoring the campaign. The dry cleaners will make minor repairs and wash coats if needed, the release said. The cleaners are also offering to collect donations along their routes pro bono.
The Shepherd’s Staff personnel will give out these items throughout the winter from their office at 30 Carroll St. in Westminster. Its hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and 3-7 p.m. on Thursdays.
