Mount Airy Middle School eighth-grader Piper Stankiewicz won out over students from more than 50 Maryland schools when she designed the winning logo for this year’s Maryland Science Olympiad.

Piper incorporated the Maryland flag in a design that features a blue crab, the state crustacean, using scientific instruments. Her design will appear on Maryland Science Olympiad T-shirts.

“Teams of students participate in Science Olympiad tournaments and non-competitive events across a wide range of STEM fields and topics. In addition, Science Olympiad is incorporated into classroom curriculum and training institutes are provided for teachers,” according to a news release from Carroll County Public Schools.

Its goals are “improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing interest in science, creating a technologically-literate workforce, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.”
