Thousands of Carroll residents still without power following Tuesday storm

Thousands of Carroll County residents were without power Wednesday after a strong storm system blew through the area Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The Maryland Department of Emergency Management’s website showed 9,730 Carroll County customers without power midday Wednesday. According to BGE, as of 3 p.m., Wednesday, about 8,837 of its 59,959 power customers, or almost 15%, were without power. FirstEnergy showed about 700 customers without power, most of whom were in the Taneytown area.

The Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Station reported that in Westminster wind speeds reached 45 mph at 6:54 p.m., Tuesday.

Due to ongoing power outages and anticipated high temperatures, the Carroll County Department of Citizen Services and the Human Services Program of Carroll County announced Tuesday afternoon that the county would operate cooling centers at library branches and senior/community centers.

Residents who are vulnerable to extreme heat and who do not have air-conditioning in their homes were encouraged to access to air conditioning and water fountains at cooling centers, open during regular business hours at the following locations:

  • Mount Airy Senior and Community Center, 703 Ridge Ave., Mount Airy
  • North Carroll Senior and Community Center, 2328 Hanover Pike, Hampstead
  • South Carroll Senior and Community Center, 5928 Mineral Hill Road, Eldersburg
  • Taneytown Senior and Community Center, 220 Roberts Mill Road, Taneytown
  • Westminster Senior and Community Center, 125 Stoner Ave., Westminster
  • Eldersburg Library Branch, 6400 Hemlock Drive
  • Finksburg Library Branch, 2265 Old Westminster Pike
  • Mount Airy Library Branch, 705 Ridge Ave.
  • Taneytown Library Branch, 10 Grand Driven
  • Westminster Library Branch, 50 E. Main St.
  • Human Services Programs Adult Homeless Shelter, 127 Stoner Ave., Westminster
