For the third year, New Windsor Mayor Neal Roop will “conduct business on the corner” this Friday, Nov.16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the third annual “Mayor on the Square, people can drop off canned food, non-perishable food, personal care products and monetary donations at 201 Main Street (at the corner of Main Street and High Street).

The “Mayor on the Square” food drive will benefit the New Windsor Food Pantry.

In his inaugural year, the mayor vowed to stand on the corner until he had collected 2,000 pounds of food.

“I’m not done until I get a ton,” Roop said

The community came out in droves to support him. With donations of more than 3,500 pounds of food, they surpassed his expectations.

Last year, Roop upped the ante to two tons before he was done. The community again surpassed his expectations, with more than 4,000 pounds of food donated. He hopes to repeat the success of last year, asking the community to help him achieve his goal of two tons collected before sunset.

Roop also put out a challenge to the mayors of Taneytown and Union Bridge to either stop by the square with a donation that day, or make a donation to their local community food banks.

To the community, Roop says, "Want to make a difference? Bring canned food and enjoy the experience!"

The New Windsor Lions Club Community Blood Drive will be held Thursday, Nov. 15, from 2 p.m to 7:30 p.m. in the Library Headquarters Community Meeting Room, 1100 Green Valley Road, New Windsor.
