As August rolls into September, I find myself asking where did summer go? We spent most of August at Francis Scott Key High School in anticipation (and preparation) for Freshman year. I still can’t believe I have a freshman in the house!

Annual ‘Round for George’ to benefit Taneytown museum

The Taneytown History Museum will host their sixth annual One Last Round for George Golf Tournament Friday, Sept. 21, at Quail Valley Golf Course, 901 Teeter Road, Littlestown. The proceeds of the tournament will benefit the museum.


The tournament schedule begins with registration and continental breakfast 7-7:30 a.m.; rules review at 7:30 a.m., shotgun start at 8 a.m. The format for the event is Captain's Choice Scramble. A lunch buffet of pit beef, side dishes, desserts, and beverages is included. There will be an awards and prizes ceremony. Baskets and 50-50 drawing will be available at the Club House.

Tickets are $80 per golfer and include greens fees, cart, range balls, continental breakfast, on course beverages (sodas and water), and lunch buffet.

The Ford Hole in One prize package includes a two-year lease on a Ford Escape on hole No. 2, and a five-day Carnival Cruise on hole No. 7, an Exotics Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood on hole No. 13, and a Yeti cooler package on hole No. 17. For a nominal additional fee of $5 you can enter a variety of contests including closest to pin, ball lying on the green pays 2 for 1, longest drive for women, men, and seniors, straightest drive for women, straightest drive for men, and a putting contest.

It’s time again for the annual Mayberry Day Picnic, set for Sunday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Mayberry Mill, 3001 East Mayberry Road.

Union Bridge Fire Company to hold Bingo Banquet

It’s Bingo Season! Pack up your daubers and join the fun on Sept. 8 when the Union Bridge Fire Company hosts a Bingo Banquet.

Tickets are $30 each, and include a meal of fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, coleslaw, rolls, cake, pie, cookies, and iced tea. Doors open at 4 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Early Bird game is at 6 p.m. Bingo starts at 6:30.

Field of Dreams Softball Tournament

The Harney VFW, Harney Volunteer Fire Department, and Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church invite neighboring fire departments, service clubs and local ball clubs to participate in the seventh annual softball tournament, to be held at the ball field located at the intersection of Conover and Bowers Road, Harney, Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday Oct. 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entry fee is $125 per team.

Cash awards will be given to the top three teams in the eliminations. First, second and third place trophies will be awarded to the respective teams. Participating medals will be awarded for each registered team.

As in past years, proceeds from the 2018 tournament will be donated to a family in need. This year’s recipient is a member of the Harney VFW. All monies will help defray the individual’s medical bills.
