Our love of trains often finds us spending a lot of time track-side hoping to see a train or two.

On May 11, we headed out to the Western Maryland Train Museum Open House to celebrate National Train Day.

The museum offers a great collection of railway memorabilia, photographs and a variety of newspaper clippings. We were delighted to find three operational train layouts.

One building houses many of the museum’s displays and research documents, as well as a train layout on the lower level. The second building is the original depot used when Western Maryland Railroad came through Union Bridge. Two more train layouts were on display there.

A variety of souvenirs including books, a Western Maryland Railway hat, HO-size cars, patches and maps are available for purchase.

If you missed National Train Day, you can check out the rest of the museum’s 2019 schedule at its website, www.westernmarylandrhs.com.
