South Carroll: Saint Joseph celebrating 150 years with Homecoming Weekend

Come and celebrate 150 years of faith at the Saint Joseph Catholic Community Church Homecoming Weekend and enjoy a program of events and activities for the community on Oct. 20 and 21.Karen Spivey, the director of mission support at the church, explained that the Homecoming is one of many events they will be hosting to celebrate their 150 anniversary. The celebration will continue until May 2019.&#8220;The purpose of the Homecoming itself it to welcome all former parishioners, past visitors and current friends and neighbors to celebrate with us,&#8221; stated Spivey.She explained that everyone in the community should attend this event to support the church and to also take this opportunity to have a fun weekend with friends and family.According to Spivey, this year, they are celebrating &#8220;Jubilee,&#8221; which is the celebration of an event every 50 years.Father Neville O&#8217;Donohue, the pastor at Saint Joseph Catholic Community defines this celebration as: &#8220;Our Saint Joseph Jubilee is a celebration of faith, charity and hope: faith in God, charity toward each other and hope in God&#8217;s plan for us. ...&#8221;On Oct. 20, starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m., they will be celebrating the Pumpkinfest. This is a family event and they will have face painting, hayrides and also a pumpkin hunt.They will be serving donuts and apple cider. This event is free.Later, at 2 p.m., they will host the Ice Cream Social, where the attendees will enjoy Norwood&#8217;s Ice Cream where they will also be serving coffee and tea. People are welcome to socialize with other people, dance to their favorite music, and also take a walk down memory lane in the Cassidy Center and tour the Ministry Fair Garden.This event ends at 4:30 p.m. and it will be hosted at Formation &amp; Fellowship Center. Admission is free.From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., they will host their Fallfest event. People 21 years old and over are invited to this event, where they will have dinner provided by Mission BBQ. Throughout the event, DJ Jake Miller will be playing music all night long and they will have local beer, wine and a 50 / 50 raffle available.Admission to this event is $25 per person or $40 a couple.On Oct. 21, starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m., they will host the Sunday Brunch. The Boy Scouts Troop 883 will be serving the breakfast for all of the attendees. They will be offering scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, orange juice, tea, and coffee.Admission to the brunch is free.In addition, each day they will host masses for everyone in the community.All of masses will focus on the church&#8217;s Journey in Christ, which is &#8220;Remember, Celebrate, Dream&#8221; as Father Neville O&#8217;Donohue, the pastor of the church, stated.&#8220;Following Jesus, individually and collectively, is a journey &#8212; a pilgrimage of discipleship. There are great things to remember about the journey so far; there are things to celebrate in the now, and there are dreams to be shared and concretized,&#8221; stated Father Neville O&#8217;Donohue.On Oct. 20, starting at 5 p.m., Father Phil Hurley, S.J., a former member of Saint Joseph, will be presenting &#8220;Celebrate our Journey in Christ.&#8221;Then, on Oct. 21, they will be offering masses at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 Noon and 5 p.m.Father Phil Hurley will be preaching at the Sunday Masses. Father Hurley is a Jesuit and former Saint Joseph parishioner from Sykesville. He is also currently the pastor of Saint Raphael Catholic Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.Father Phil will preside at the Saturday 5 p.m. Vigil Mass and then preach at the Sunday 8, 10 and 12 p.m. Masses on October 20th and 21st.Everyone in the community is invited to this event and the church encourages former parishioners to attend.The church encourages all of the attendees to register online even if the event they are attending is free. Main Street, Mount Airy, or at Mount Airy Mattress located at 505 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.The bingo night will be hosted at the MAVFC Reception Hall located at 1008 Twin Arch Rd Mount Airy.The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company welcomes the community to drive through their parking lot and purchase their BBQ Chicken Dinner on October 14 beginning at noon.They will be offering 1/2 BBQ Chicken, roll and two sides. The available sides are macaroni salad, potato salad, cole slaw and applesauce.The attendees do not need to get out of their cars to get their food, there will be volunteers helping deliver the food.The cost of the dinner is $12. The event will be hosted until they run out or until 5 p.m.All of the proceeds will benefit the Fire Company.The fire department&#8217;s parking lot is located at 702 N.
