North Carroll: Manchester United Bocce group plans 2019 tournaments, beneficiaries

The 2019 Manchester United Bocce Steering Committee met recently to discuss details of the 2019 tournaments.

According to a news release, for more than 10 years the tournaments have been held at the Manchester United Courts and, with a minimum of a $10 donation per player, more than $30,000 has been raised for local nonprofits.


It was decided that the following would be recipients from the money raised during the 2019 tournaments: North East Social Action Program was selected for the first tournament on June 15. The second tournament, to be held July 13, will benefit Together We Own It, a program for children and their families operating primarily in Carroll and Wicomico counties; and the third tournament, to be held Aug. 17, will donate proceeds to Chester’s Café in Manchester.

In order to introduce the game of bocce to more people, members of the committee will attend the annual Hampstead-Manchester Business & Community Expo, to be held Saturday, March 16 at Manchester Valley High School.


In addition, the news release highlights some new events for the group this year, including a Bocce Mixer to be held May 18; and a wine and cheese event that will be held at a date to be announced.

The tournaments are held at 3017 Walnut St., where there is free parking; drinks and refreshments will be served as well.

Party time at Manchester Valley High

The Manchester Valley High School Athletic Boosters are hosting a Winter Fundraising Party from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the Lineboro Fire Hall.


This event is for those 21 and older, and admission is $40 per person. The admission fee includes a meal of steamed and fried shrimp, chicken wings, pit beef, sides and fixings, beer, soda, and water; plus music by a deejay. The event is BYOB.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Upperco is hosting its annual Easter Eggs and Candy Sale.

In addition, there will be a money wheel, a silent auction, a 50/50 and a great big basket raffle. All parents and friends of Manchester Valley students, and the surrounding communities, are welcome.

Mystery Comedy spoof

The Manchester Volunteer Fire Department presents “The Butler Did It, Again!” from March 29 through March 31 in the fire department auditorium.

Come watch personnel from the fire department and ladies auxiliary perform a mystery comedy spoof by Tim Kelly in two acts.

Times for the show are 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 31. Adults are $8, those ages 6 to 12 are $5 and those younger than 6 are free.

On Saturday, if you want to come to the show, but not worry about dinner — no problem! Join the ladies auxiliary in the activities building for social hour at 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. The advanced ticket price of $25 (for this day only) will include tickets to the show and an all-you-can-eat, buffet-style dinner.

During all the performances, food, drinks and baked goods will be available for purchase.

Designer Bingo in Lineboro

Lazarus United Church of Christ will host a Designer Bingo on Saturday, March 30 at the Lineboro fire hall. The doors open at 5 p.m., and the bingo will start at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Some of the prizes include items from Coach, Vera Bradley, Kate Spade and Dooney & Burke. There will be 20 regular games, raffles, game of chance, specials and two King Tuts. There will also be food items for sale.

Legion searches for names

To have fought for your country is an honor, and we as civilians honor those who have served and sacrificed. The Hampstead American Legion Post 200 has begun a search for names to be added to a new plaque at the War Memorial on Main Street in Hampstead.

To be eligible, you must have served in the military during a war, crisis or conflict, been honorably discharged, and lived in the Hampstead mailing area when you joined. According to a news release, the eligibility dates are as follows:

April 6, 1917-Nov. 11, 1918 (WWI); Dec. 7, 1941-Dec. 31, 1946 (WWII); June 25, 1950-Jan. 31, 1955 (Korean War); Feb. 28, 1961-May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War); Aug. 24, 1982-July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada); Dec. 20, 1989-Jan. 31, 1990 (Panama); and Aug. 2, 1990 through today (Gulf War/War on Terrorism, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.)
