Farmers markets bringing local products to residents in every corner of Carroll

No matter where you live in Carroll County, you’re a short drive from a farmers market this time of year, giving you the chance to pick up tasty, healthy and locally produced products on a regular basis.

The Mount Airy Main Street Farmers Market got the jump on the rest, opening for the season on May 16 while the Downtown Westminster Farmers Market opened May 19 and the Sykesville Farmers Market opened on May 20. Finksburg, Hampstead and Taneytown all saw their markets open for the season on June 2, while the oldest and biggest of them all, the Carroll County Farmers Market, opens on June 16.


The Carroll County Farmers Market is held every Saturday as are the farmers markets in downtown Westminster, Finksburg, Hampstead and Taneytown. Sykesville’s is on Sundays and Mount Airy’s is on Wednesdays. Here is some pertinent information about each, with “selling points” culled from their respective websites.

Mt. Airy Main Street Farmers Market

When: 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, May 16 through Sept. 26

Where: Railyard Lot behind the historic Mount Airy Train Station at 3 N. Main St.

Selling points: “We're working with our local restaurants to offer farm-to-fork options with some of the farmers' market locally grown or produced products! Local musicians are invited to the market to play live, locally grown music. We'll have some demonstrations on how to prepare foods and some fun activities too, such as Feel the Churn Butter Aerobics and more!”

Downtown Westminster Farmers Market

When: 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, May 19 through Nov. 17

Where: Conaway lot at Md. 27 and Railroad Avenue in Westminster

Selling points: Founded in 1994, with 20 vendors listed on the site, Westminster has “the longest season of any market in Carroll County. This gives you 27 weeks to pick up locally-grown produce, meats, poultry, pork, eggs, cheese, baked goods, coffee and prepared foods! … Our Market focuses on locally grown food and farm produced items. No, you won't find many crafts, but we hope you do go home with your ingredients for fresh, healthy meals for the week. From veggies to fruits, cheese to meat, we are working hard to bring you the freshest, healthiest food available.”

Sykesville Farmers Market

When: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays, May 20 through Oct. 28

Where: Parking lot at the corner of Sandosky Road and Town House Drive (behind E.W. Becks) in Sykesville

Selling points: “You can find a variety of fruits and vegetables, herbs, honey, cakes, nuts, beef, pork, poultry, eggs, cheese, baked goods, dog treats, jewelry, pickles, sangria, and more. … We have the Junior Market returning that is entirely operated by the kids! Every Sunday we will have a guest Non-Profit group joining us to connect with our community. The Little Sykes railway will be running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Did we mention we have a moon bounce and kids games (hula hoops, chalk, and jump ropes…) always available for free at the market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.?”

Finksburg Farmers Market

When: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, June 2 through Sept. 29


Where: 3006 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg

Hampstead Farmers Market

When: 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, June 2 through Sept. 29

Where: On the carnival grounds of the Hampstead volunteer fire company, at 1341 N. Main St.

Selling points: “In addition to 22 favorite vendors returning from last summer, 11 (that's right! 11!) new vendors will be joining the Hampstead Farmers Market family! This season, you'll find cut flowers, honey, salsa, stained glass, crocheted items and beautiful crafts in addition to all the bountiful produce, baked goods, jewelry, soaps, meats, eggs, cheeses, photos, plants, olives and vinegars that you enjoyed last year! And here's another awesome addition: Each month, the market will offer delicious breakfast sandwiches made by a different local group!”

Taneytown Farmers Market

When: 9 a.m to noon Saturdays, June 2 through late September

Where: Outside New Beginnings Christian Learning Center, 501 E. Baltimore St.

Selling points: “Local produce, eggs, cheese, vegetables, herbs and flowers.” Note that the site will change on Saturday, June 16, as the market will move to Taneytown Memorial Park to be a part of the annual Taneytown Wine, Art and Music Fest.

Carroll County Farmers Market

When: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, June 16 through Sept. 8

Where: 700 Agricultural Drive, Westminster

Selling points: “The Carroll County Farmer’s market is the oldest farmers market in Carroll County and the second oldest in the state of Maryland. The market began in July of 1971 with the help of county Extension agent, Robert L. Jones, as an outlet for local farmers to sell their products and to give local consumers a chance to buy farm fresh produce, eggs, baked goods, jams and jellies, agricultural products and handmade crafts. The market now has 65-100 vendors participating each week.” Each week has a different theme, including Christmas in July on July 7, the peach festival on Aug. 11 and their heirloom tomato festival on Aug. 18.
