On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Pleasant Valley Fall Fest and Car Show offers fun for all ages from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees will find entertainment, food, vendors, raffles, and more. Sponsored by St. Matthew's United Church of Christ in Pleasant Valley, this celebration of autumn will be held rain or shine.
Church member Angela Bowersox said she always looks forward to visiting with attendees.
“Many of the same people come back for this event,” she said. “They look for it because we have been doing it for so many years.”
Craft and flea market vendors will sell a variety of items, including upcycled crafts like tote bags made from plastic feed bags, purses from jeans and other creative gear. In addition, the silent auction will feature sports memorabilia, themed baskets and other items.
Kids will like the children's craft area where they can paint a pumpkin for a small fee, visit a variety of animals at the petting zoo, or meet local horsewoman, Liuda Galinaitis. She’s bringing her show horse, Misty (not of Chincoteague), to meet fans and pose for photos with them. Then, at 10:30 a.m., catch the magic of Tim Hall or get a special balloon from Missy’s Balloon Creations. She’ll be there from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
“Missy always makes sure [all the kids] get a balloon creation,” Bowersox said.
If you like cars, check out vintage automobiles at the car show, or register your own car. Registration is from 8:30 to 11 a.m. with an awards presentation at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per car for advanced registration or $15 if day of event registration. Look for delicious home-made food offered for sale in the kitchen and a bake sale table with an assortment of desserts.
“People always enjoy our apple dumplings which we’ll be making on Friday,” said Bowersox. “We added tacos in a bag to the menu this year, but we will have all of our favorites, too, all kinds of good soups, sandwiches, pies and baked goods.”
Bowersox said the church has a goal of supporting local missions and community groups. Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County will have a display, as will Carroll County Food Sunday. In addition, the sale of homemade cookies donated by church members will benefit Carroll County Food Sunday.
Do you have a gently used or outgrown coat at home? If you do, why not bring it along? The church is collecting coats for the Shepherd's Staff Call for Coats program. Bowersox said hats and gloves are welcome donations, too.
In addition, there will be a number of free books on hand. Church members will unveil their current project, A Little Free Library for Pleasant Valley.
“This is a good event for families to come to because we have activities for all ages, especially for the children,” Bowersox said. “People always enjoy the cars and it is a good day to come out and fellowship with the people in Pleasant Valley.”

Hubcaps show to benefit Veterans’ Independence Program
On Saturday Oct. 20, VFW Post 467’s Auxiliary will host the fabulous Hubcaps for a 7 to 11 p.m. show that will benefit the Carroll County Veterans’ Independence Program [CCVIP].
Kim Cook, VFW Auxiliary President, spoke of why this show is important to her.
“The VFW Auxiliary always supports either veterans at our Post or veterans in the community,” she said. “The Carroll County Veterans Independence Program is a cause that even the VFW Department of Maryland has donated $10,000 to, so — being local — we [at] the Auxiliary of Post 467 VFW want to continue this support.”
The CCVIP website at carrollcountyvip.org shares its goal of providing services to the approximately 13,000 veterans living in Carroll County and nearby communities.
“According to a 2016 federal government report an average of 8.75 percent of that population is homeless at any given time,” the website states. “Once completed the facility will: Provide shelter, assistance and social support for Carroll county veterans and their families; Provide services related to housing, transportation, physical and mental health care and nutritional needs; Provide job training and educational programs, internships and mentoring opportunities; Promote emotional and social well-being and advocacy for those who sacrificed and served our Nation.”
“We won't be selling food at this event,” Cook said, “but there will be chips and pretzels, a cash bar, a 50/50 drawing, and raffle [items].”
Tickets for the Hubcaps cost $20 each or $30 per couple. Purchase them at the VFW, 519 Poole Road in Westminster or by calling them at 410-848-9888. Sodas are included in the ticket price.
Trivia Night at Winters Mill High School
Winters Mill High School Music Booster Association will hold a Trivia Night on Friday, Oct. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the school cafeteria, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
Music Booster Association secretary Angela Baublitz said the organization works with the marching band, concert band, orchestra, percussion and chorus.
“One of the things that funds raised by this event will go toward is purchasing new instruments,” she said. “This year we need a bass, two cellos, a marching baritone and marching band drums. We also pay dry cleaning bills for band uniforms and tux dry cleaning for concerts. It helps us bring in guest conductors, to do instrument repairs [on the larger school-owned instruments], it helps defray the cost of the trips students make to compete, purchases new music for both choral and instrumental, and helps with other needed items throughout the year.”
All ages are welcome to play, so sign your family up as a team, bring a group of friends or anyone else you’d like to spend the evening with. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. The cost is $10 per team with a limit of four people per team. Cost per team at the door will be $15.
Throughout the evening, food will be offered for sale, including pizza, Chick-Fil-a, burgers and more. Raffle tickets will be sold at the event, as well.
“We have various items including a fall wreath and Longaberger baskets filled with items,” Baublitz said. “We have a Christmas cookie baking basket, one with Mary Kay items, a children’s basket, a car wash basket and others. We hope to have a winter comfort basket and a movie basket as well as other themed baskets.”
Raffle tickets cost $1 per ticket or five for $3 or 20 tickets for $10. You must be present to win.
“If anyone would like to donate gift cards or items for raffle we are more than willing to accept more items,” Baublitz said.
Students have received the form to register teams, but Baublitz encourages the public to join them and sign up today, “even if you don’t have a student at Winters Mill.”
“You can send pre-registration with the name of your team captain, team name, team members, and a contact phone number and payment to the high school in care of Ms. Gottlieb or Mr. Andrews,” she said.

Baublitz said their past Trivia Nights have always been a lot of fun.
“Trivia night has always been a great success and we raise a bit of money to help the music program at Winters Mill High School,” she said. “You will have a lot of fun if you attend.
