The Mount Airy mayor and Town Council on Monday, Aug. 6, voted unanimously in favor of ordinance 2018-7, which amends the town’s 2018-2019 budget to include money for the impending special election — Mount Airy’s first.
The election is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 10, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company Reception Hall.
Town Planning Commission member Patty Washabaugh; Scott Sirchio, an alternate on the same commission; and Matthew McDonough are running for the recently vacated council seat.
Former Councilman Scott Strong resigned from his position, effective July 9, part-way through his second term after accepting an engineering job in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The September special election will cost $4,207. The council decided to pay election workers minimum wage for their work on election day, accounting for $707, and allocated the remaining $3,500 for election expenses, according to the ordinance.
Mount Airy decided to hire McAfee Election Services, a company they’ve often employed for elections, to facilitate the polls. McAfee will provide electronic voting machines, lay out the ballot, set up on election day and send an on-site technician to handle any technological problems, the Board of Elections explained at its June 7 meeting.
Residents must register to vote by Monday, Aug. 13, at 5 p.m., Bruce Walz, chair of the Board of Elections, told the Town Council.

“If you currently live in Mount Airy town limits and are a registered voter with Frederick or Carroll County Election Boards, you are automatically registered to vote,” he said.
