House fire in Mount Airy sends one resident to hospital

A house fire in Mount Airy left one resident injured Sunday night.

The fire occurred at the 1100 block of Village Gate Court with the first responding unit arrived at 9:42 p.m. About 20 units and 65 personnel responded to the fire from Carroll, Frederick and Montgomery Counties.

Two people were trapped inside as units were dispatched. When the Mount Airy Volunteer Department, the first responding unit, arrived on the scene, the two residents made it outside the house.

The fire was in a bedroom on the second floor. Arriving units initiated a “quick attack and search” of the residence, according to a news release from the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department.

Emergency medical personnel evaluated the two victims and transported one male victim to the hospital for precautionary examination for smoke inhalation. No additional victims were found. The fire in the bedroom was quickly extinguished.

Even though the fire was under control by 9:55 p.m., units didn’t clear the scene until 11:55 p.m. An extensive check was conducted with only minor extension of the fire out of the room. Moderate smoke damage was incurred throughout the second floor of the house. Most of the damage occurred on the second floor, according to release.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and damage figures are not yet available.
