For a quarter of a century, the Month of Sundays free concert series has been bringing music to Westminster during the summer.
This year, the family-friendly concerts return with four acts from a variety of genres. All concerts take place at 6:45 p.m. at Westminster City Park, 11 Longwell Avenue.
The concerts are sponsored by the city, and the only thing guests have to bring is a lawn chair or a blanket and hopefully some friends and family, said Westminster Recreation and Parks Assistant Director Heather Mullendore.
For many of the concerts, local car groups will be in attendance, adding an extra dimension of entertainment for those who like to browse through classic vehicles.
“I think it is something that people enjoy,” Mullendore said of the concert series’ anniversary. “It’s a good way to end the week and relax.”
The four acts on the schedule for this month are The Fabulous Hubcaps, The Frank Plumer Band, Dean Crawford and the Dunn's River Band and Jimmy and The Parrots.
The Fabulous Hubcaps have a large following in the area of those that love the nostalgic sounds of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. Members of the group have been playing together for decades and they take the performance to the next level by dressing up in outfits that match the eras of their musical selections.
More info about the group is available at www.thehubcaps.com.
Concertgoers will find a little of everything when they see The Frank Plumer Band live with a mix of mix classical, jazz and popular music together. Frank Plumer has performed for presidents and well-known actors alike. The family ensemble plays the second concert of the series on July 14. More info about the group is available at frankplumer.wixsite.com/music.
There is no shortage of country music fans in Carroll, and they won’t want to miss the third week of the concert series, which features Dean Crawford and the Dunn's River Band on July 21.
The act is based in Maryland where Crawford has been honored for songwriting at the Maryland Music Awards, and have been honored to open for country greats including George Jones. More information is available at www.simplydean.com.
Finishing out the series are Jimmy and The Parrots on July 28 for those who know that summer isn’t complete without the sweet sounds of Jimmy Buffett. This band is a tribute and also play their own tropical-inspired originals.
They have been a featured act at the annual Meeting of the Minds Parrot Head conventions in Key West, Florida for more than 15 years. More information is available at yeamon.com.
The concerts are somewhat weather dependent, and thunder and lighting would likely mean a cancellation for safety concerns. The city will post updates on the City of Westminster Recreation & Parks Department Facebook page.
Vendors will be on the scene with food choices including pizza, burgers and fries or sweet treats like kettle popcorn, funnel cake and snowballs.
Throughout the rest of July, Recreation and Parks is looking forward to events that draw hundreds and even crack a thousand participants. Many are aimed at children who may be searching for some recreation during the long days of summer break from the public schools.
The Recreation and Parks schedule of events is located on the City of Westminster website, www.westminstermd.gov under the tab for Current and Upcoming Events on the left.
