Carroll County-based Marathon Technology Solutions finding ways to thrive amid pandemic

Marathon Technology Solutions has been a Carroll County-based small business for more than a decade, but owner Alex Bush and his staff are calling this year the company’s most memorable.

Even after starting a cabling and fiber optics company in 2008, changing the name and incorporating in 2014, and restarting things two years later, Bush and his employees have 2020 atop the list. And that’s despite of the coronavirus pandemic ― Marathon Technology Solutions expanded its work force, and soon will be expanding its work place, thanks to a boom in business and a need for more services.

Marathon has gone from five employees, just five years ago, to a staff of 25 this year, and Bush said his company has been able to make recent hires of people who were unemployed amid the pandemic. Eight new employees are with Marathon this year, after the company had a staff of 13 two years ago.

Bush, a Liberty High School graduate, grew up in Eldersburg and said he has lived in the 21784 ZIP code for most of his life. Four years ago, wanting to break free from business partners, Bush said he felt the need to start fresh.

Bush said he figured, “if I can’t do it on my own, then I’m not going to do it.”

So he worked out of his house with wife Holly, who Bush said was his accountant and back-office manager. Any worries about business slowing down soon disappeared. Marathon had commercial businesses in need of tech services, and the Bushes were busy.

“Within six months [Holly] had her own office and I moved into another office in the house,” Bush said.

Marathon moved to its current location in 2018, a 2,000-square foot facility on Progress Way in Eldersburg. Bush said his business added security system installation to its services that same year, which meant an increase in demand and employees.

And now an increase in size ― company president Bush and Nicole Morgan, director of marketing, said Marathon is set to relocate in a few weeks to a 6,000-sqaure foot site across the street form where it is now.

“We are extremely busy now, which is amazing, Morgan said. “We’re just so thankful for that. It’s been incredible. It’s not lost on us how lucky we are and how thankful we are that we have a great base of customers that trust us and believe in us.”

Marathon sticks to its local roots. Alex and Holly Bush are both from Carroll, as is Morgan, along with husband David, who works for the company as director of security. The employee staff includes other county residents, as well as a father-and-son duo, an uncle and nephew, and a pair of brothers.

“We all feel like a family for sure,” Nicole Morgan said. “Especially through all of this, it’s brought us all much closer going through these crazy times together.”

Morgan said the notion of their business thriving amid the pandemic was scary. There were times when technicians and office staff didn’t have work, and Marathon operated on a week-to-week basis. Work picked up, and Morgan said soon the tech company focused on its expansion process.

“It has definitely been amazing,” Morgan said. “We just kind of kept pushing through. The work just was steadily coming in and getting a little heavier, and we ended up really hiring eight people during the pandemic. Two of those were people who had lost their jobs because of it. They’re obviously very thankful to be working and to be busy.”

Marathon serves businesses in the Maryland-Washington DC corridor, Bush said, along with northern Virginia. Carroll County’s government and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office are two major local customers, Bush said, and Marathon is also working on a project with Taneytown-based EVAPCO.

“Marathon is growing,” Bush said. “It’s nice to be in Carroll County.”
