The Northern Landfill, in Westminster, reopened to residential haulers on Monday morning after being closed for eight days by county government in an effort to keep staff and customers safe from the coronavirus.

The county commissioners unanimously voted Thursday to reopen the landfill, albeit with reduced hours and other new practices in place one week after voting, 3-2, to close it for at least two weeks out of concern that it was seeing too much traffic and posing a threat for transmission of the virus.

The landfill is now open 8 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Wednesday, 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and all day Saturday. Recycling and yard waste from residents can be disposed of all day Monday through Saturday.

In addition to the reduced hours, other new measures include signage indicating that the landfill is open only to Carroll residents (identification required), Plexiglas barriers at inbound and outbound stations, face masks for staff and signage indicating for people to maintain 6-foot social distance.
