Carroll Cash Day to bring finance fun to Taneytown

You can have money on the mind Saturday, June 1, at the Human Services Programs of Carroll County. Inc, Carroll Cash Day in Taneytown.

A free, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event, Cash Day is an educational program designed to help children and adults better understand how to manage and grow their money, understand credit, budgeting and other matters of personal finance.

The event will be held at the Taneytown branch of the Carroll County Public Library, 10 Grand Drive, Taneytown.

“This day is all about making learning about money into something fun,” Scott Yard, executive director of HSP, wrote in an email. “Partnering with the Carroll County Public Library was a great choice. They are just as passionate as we are about educating our community with basic financial principles, and they know how to make learning fun.”

While parents can learn about saving for college or buying a mortgage from vendors, children can play interactive simulations and win prizes with games and crafts and scavenger hunts, according to HSP Director of Development Matt Peregoy.

What if I told you there was an organization responsible for processing $4.3 million in tax returns and saving residents of Carroll County over $700,000 in tax filing fees over the last three years? Would you believe that organization was a non-profit Community Action Agency?

There will also be free document shredding services available and an energy savings demonstration.

It will be the third Cash Day event HSP has organized, according to Peregoy, the first two being held at the North Carroll library branch.

And while Yard notes that many people know HSP for the nonprofits emergency services, such as operating the county’s five homeless shelters, “We do a lot of prevention work as well,” he wrote. “If we can teach people how to save money, spend wisely, and grow their savings, we can prevent a lot of emergency situations.”
