'The Great Blue Heron,' by Sykesville artist Virginia Sperry, unveiled at Piney Run Park

Delayed for three weeks because of the surprise spring snow, Sykesville artist Virginia Sperry finally got to unveil her welded steel sculpture, "The Great Blue Heron," on Thursday at Piney Run Park.

The sculpture is located just offshore in Piney Run Reservoir, near the boathouse, overlooking the docks and water. An information plaque near the piece provides more details about the native species.

The project was made possible with a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council with additional funds provided by the Carroll County Arts Council and Piney Run Park Recreation and Conservation Council.

Sykesville artist Virginia Sperry will unveil her welded steel sculpture “The Great Blue Heron” at Piney Run Park on April 12.

Sperry, who recently called the project "a labor of love," began construction on it in spring 2017.

Carroll County's Department of Recreation and Parks Director Jeff Degitz previously said the work would be "a great addition to the park." Carroll County Arts Council Executive Director Sandy Oxx said, "It's a really nice balance of anatomically correct with a whimsical aesthetic."

Sperry's next studio and sculpture garden tour is in June. For more information, visit www.virginiasperry.com.
