The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday evening in the area of New Windsor Road (Md. 31) and Coe Drive.
At about 6:35 p.m. fire, EMS and Sheriff’s Office personnel found a Jeep Cherokee SUV that had overturned in the westbound shoulder of the road, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle was traveling east on New Windsor Road when its right wheels went off the road, according to the release.
“The driver over corrected to the left, causing the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise and sending it across the roadway onto the westbound grassy shoulder. The vehicle then struck the embankment, causing it to roll,” according to the release.
New Windsor volunteer fire company personnel took the driver, Daniel William Wood, 23, of New Windsor, to Carroll Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Three passengers were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The three — a woman, 21, of Union Bridge; a woman, 21, of Freeland; and a man, 22, of Hampstead — were not believed to have life-threatening injuries, according to the release.
An additional passenger, a 22-year-old New Windsor man, was taken by ambulance to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. A fifth passenger was treated and released at the scene of the crash.
The Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is conducting an ongoing investigation.
