From Norway, Sweden and the Shetland Islands, come a trio of masterful folk musicians known as the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc.
They are scheduled to perform Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main Street, Westminster.
Tickets are $25 general admission or $22 for seniors 65+ and teenagers. With ID, Carroll County Public School staff tickets are $10. Tickets may be purchased at the box office, by calling 410-857-2771 or online at CommonGroundOnTheHill.org. Seating begins at 7 p.m. the night of the show.
The concert is presented as part of the 2018-19 Common Ground on the Hill Concert Series.
Olav Luksengård Mjelva of Norway, Anders Hall of Sweden and Kevin Henderson of Shetland Islands formed the ensemble in 2009, though each was already regarded as an expert in his own tradition in the international folk music community.
Together, “With a firm focus on the rich traditional fiddle music from where they each belong, the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc have developed a sound that has been described as ‘unique,’ ‘meaningful,’ ‘intense’ and ‘invigorating.’ Their clever use of harmony, rhythm, riffs and bass lines creates a sound that leaves the listener enthralled but at the same time dumbfounded that the sound only comes from three fiddles,” according to a release from Common Ground on the Hill.
Audiences all over the world have come to see them perform.
“Each Nordic Bloc player’s unique style and sound is complemented by the other and their chosen instruments,” Orkney News Today wrote.
"Seldom before can three fiddlers have sounded so well matched as the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc. And seldom before can three fiddles have sounded so much like four and at times five instruments without using electronic trickery,” wrote Scotland’s The Herald.
Their second album “Deliverance” and their first, eponymous album are available to listen to and purchase, and more information about the group is available at www.thenordicfiddlersbloc.com.
Harvey Reid & Joyce Andersen
As part of the Common Ground on the Hill Baltimore Series, Acoustic Music Masters Harvey Reid and Joyce Andersen will perform Friday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Andersen and Reid may play acoustic music, but they are hailed as a power duo who bring a variety from Celtic jigs to old-time fiddle to blues, gospel and ballads.
“They are comfortable in a dizzying array of styles of roots and Americana music. They jump from show-stopping Celtic jigs and old-time fiddle tunes to house-shaking blues rockers, soaring gospel duets, and achingly beautiful ballads, according to the release.
They perform at The Church of the Redeemer, 5603 North Charles St., Baltimore.
Tickets are available at www.commongroundonthehill.org/baltimore for $25 general admission or $22 for seniors over 65 and teenagers with ID.
