Ahead of this spring’s municipal elections, the Carroll County Times has asked candidates to provide information on themselves and their priorities. Their responses are listed here in full.
Sykesville Town Council member Anna Carter is running against Mark Dyer, Jane Mergler and Jeremiah Schofield, who serves on the Sykesville planning commission, for three seats on the council. Here are Carter’s responses.
I have worked in the insurance industry for the past 30 years. For the last 5 years, I have been employed by GEICO.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Baltimore.
I am currently a Town Council woman for the Town of Sykesville and the Liaison to the Parks and Rec Committee. I am an avid volunteer to the Sykesville Main Street events.
Since becoming a council member in 2013 , I have worked diligently to keep Sykesville moving in a direction that promotes the growth of our business community while insuring that our citizens are provided with adequate public services while at the same time controlling spending so the town remains on a solid financial foundation.
How do you plan to represent your municipality’s interests in the county government?
I plan on remaining active in the county government by maintaining dialogs with other county representatives and officials. I attend quarterly Maryland Municipal League meetings where county leaders can discuss the topics that affect each municipality and seek innovative solutions to the challenges that face us all.
Name something you would begin working to accomplish as soon as your first week on the job.
Continue with the process of hiring a new Town Manager. Sykesville is currently in need of a new town manager so my first priority is finding that right candidate to fill that position.
What skills do you have to offer constituents that other candidates might not?
Current member of the Town Council with 5 ½ years experience
What one thing would you most like to see changed?
I would like to see improvements to the Town’s infrastructure and insure roads, sidewalks and drainage issues don’t cause unexpected hardships.
What are your campaign priorities?
Hire an energetic Town Manager that will keep the Mayor and Town Council’s vision for the Town moving forward.
Continue with the synergy of Main Street and community.
First and foremost, I would like to see the historical buildings revitalized and be used. The developers have a vision of the complex that will enhance our community and complement our Main Street. I would to see their plans come to fruition.
