The weather for Saturday was forecast to be a little too chilly to enjoy chili. The 2018 Main Street Heat Chili Cookoff in Mount Airy has been postponed until May 26 and is now planned as a start to Memorial Day weekend.

The event is planned to feature chili and salsa from nearly 30 competing cooks and has historically drawn large crowds to Main Street for tasting chili and perusing downtown shops and vendors. It is sponsored by the 4 County Lions Club and the Mount Airy Main Street Association.

"The reschedule is due to safety concerns with travel and the SHA response to potential weather," organizer Larry Hushour wrote in a post on the event's Facebook page. "Closing Main Street is in jeopardy due to the priority of road preparation and care in inclement weather. Detour routes are not ideal for slick roads. And pedestrian routes will be negatively impacted. We hope our vendors and cooks from CT, PA, OH, VA and local MD will be able to adjust to our May 26, reschedule date."
