Mount Airy Police investigating man's death after apparent bicycle accident at Watkins Park

The Mount Airy Police Department is investigating the death of a 35-year-old man that occurred at Watkins Park last week.

Police were dispatched at 6:35 p.m. Dec. 3 to assist an injured person at Watkins Park at 615 Center St., according to a news release from the Police Department issued Monday.

Cass Bunch IV was found with a serious head injury that was apparently the result of a bicycle accident, according to police. Bunch was conscious and breathing but not alert.

EMS was on scene and treating Bunch when police arrived, according to the release. Police spoke with Bunch’s mother, Barbara Mae Bunch, who discovered her son at the park. She said that he had not been seen since 3 p.m. and she found him there covered in blood, according to police.

Bunch was not wearing a bicycle helmet.

EMS transported Bunch to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company Carnival Grounds where he was transferred to Maryland State Police Trooper 3 and flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, according to the release. Bunch succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The incident remains under investigation, however, at this time there is no evidence of any foul play, police said. Anyone with additional information may contact the Mount Airy Police Department at 301-703-1375.
