After beginning excavation Monday in order to do a controlled breach on the Cascade Lake dam, a majority of the work has been completed and Snydersburg Road in the area of the dam has reopened.

With most of the excavation done, the emergency condition at the dam has been abated, according to a news release from county government.

And while there will still be a risk of a dam failure until all phases of the excavation process are complete, the significantly lowered water level now poses little risk to people and properties downstream, according to the release.

Pumping operations will continue at a reduced rate as the final excavation stages are complete. Residents downstream might still notice increased water levels, according to the release.

Excavation operations at the dam continue to be monitored by the property owner’s engineers and by the Maryland Department of the Environment’s Division of Dam Safety.
