With Maryland gas prices at an average of $2.47 per gallon this week, and Carroll County’s average even lower — with multiple locations at $2.17 per gallon — residents have more to be thankful for this holiday season.
And the national gas price average is $2.62 per gallon, which is 8 cents less than a week ago, 25 cents less than last month, but still 8 cents more than last year’s price on this date, according to a release from AAA Gas Watch on Nov. 19.
High’s Dairy Store on Railroad Avenue in Westminster is one of the spots with low gas prices, and has been selling a lot of it, staff said Wednesday morning.
“We are getting deliveries every day,” said the store’s manager Tom Vicchio, “everyone is trying to jump on those prices.”
He said the store sold more than 5,000 gallons in a 4-hour period on Nov. 21, and that each day the store’s supply runs low in time for the next delivery.
Manchester resident Greg Duncan was filling up his tank shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday, and said he is going to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for Thanksgiving.
Although low gas prices are good, he said, he feels higher gas prices are more influential on travel plans.
“Considering I was in L.A. on a trip and it was almost at $4 a gallon, these prices are great,” said Duncan. “It’s been a couple years [since I’ve seen prices like this]. It’s the lowest I’ve seen in town.”
The prices are helpful for people traveling long distances, but people staying in town for the holidays are also appreciative.
Dan Phillips and his wife Kristy Phillips said they usually travel to Dundalk and Hanover, Pennsylvania during the holidays, but will be hosting Thanksgiving at their house in Westminster.
“We’ve got family coming from all over, Connecticut, Florida, [Pennsylvania],” Dan Phillips said sitting in the driver’s seat of his car after filling his tank, while his wife picked up a soda from inside the store. “My wife’s going to be doing some serious cooking starting today.”
He said he doesn’t know what the gas prices are in those states, but that he and his wife have been coming to High’s to fill their tank ever since the prices dipped.
And those who travel frequently, like Westminster resident Larry Carper, see more of the fluctuation.
While filling his tank at Carroll Motor Fuels on Main Street in Westminster he said he still thinks gas prices are too high all around.
“Gas is just too high,” he said, “$2.17 here is great though. I was in Delaware last weekend though and gas was at $2.109.
