Shirley Smith

Church of the Ascension, in Westminster, has welcomed Shirley Smith as the congregation's new director of music ministries.

Smith is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance, and George Washington University, where she earned a Master of Music degree in organ performance. She also received a Master of Science degree in pastoral counseling at Norwich University.

She began working at Church of the Ascension on Oct. 1. She is directing the Ascension Choir as well as the Youth Praise Team.

Smith was director of music ministries at Trinity Pro-Cathedral Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; a hospice volunteer; the dean of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists; and a student for lay ministry in the Episcopal Church.

She said she loves working with people and most especially with children, and that worship is the highlight of her week.

Smith is also a piano and organ teacher, and she said she is excited to resume her teaching in Westminster.
