"Orphan #8" Author Kim van Alkemade: 2 p.m. For ages 13-adults. Kim van Alkemade is the author of the historical fiction novel "Orphan #8" (William Morrow Aug. 4, 2015). Her creative nonfiction essays have appeared in literary journals including Alaska Quarterly Review, CutBank, and So To Speak. She spent eight years researching and writing Orphan #8. It all began with her interest in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York, the institution in which her grandfather, Victor Berger, and his brothers, Charlie and Seymour, grew up. Her great­grandmother, Fannie Berger, worked at the orphanage, first as a domestic and later as a counselor. Many of the characters and events in "Orphan #8" were inspired by her family history. Books will be available for purchase and signing. A Celebrating America program. All attendees need to register.

Deep Relaxation Class: 7 p.m. For ages 13-adults. Join us and experience the benefits of a deep relaxation session, in this inward focused yoga class. Through gentle asanas (comfortable stretching), yoga nidra (deep relaxation), an introduction to pranayama (breathing practices), and meditation we work from the physical body to the subtle bodies, restoring and inviting peace to our being. No experience necessary. Please bring a mat and a blanket. All attendees need to register.

Po-Go in the Park: 2 p.m. For all ages. Let's have some fun with Pokemon Go at the library. Meet us in the lobby of the Finksburg Branch to go with a group over to the Sandymount Park where we will be visiting all six of the PokeStops at the park and placing lures out on two stops. If you do two loops around the park, it's about a mile walk. This will be a great opportunity to catch some Pokemon, talk tips, and hatch some eggs you have in the incubator. Afterwards, you can go back to the library and battle at our PokeGym. Refreshments will be served. In the case of questionable weather, please call the branch ahead of time at 410-386-4505. Refreshments will be served.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover: 6:30 p.m. For all ages. Register for this event. Wear your PJs and bring your favorite stuffed animal for this bedtime-themed party. We'll have fun with cool crafts, a bedtime snack, and great bedtime stories. You will also have a chance to leave your furry friend in the library for an animals-only sleepover. Songs, Stories, and Seniors: 10:30 a.m. For ages 2-adults. Stop by for a fun program filled with bell ringing, stories, and a craft with the Senior Inclusion Program. The Senior Inclusion Program is a group of senior citizens with developmental disabilities who participate in a retirement program at Westminster Senior Center. Come and join us for some great fun. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Me and My Shadow: 11 a.m. For ages 8-12. Come to Finksburg and learn firsthand what really goes on in the library. Shadow our staff and see how we get things onto our shelves and into your hands. The 2016 GSK Science in the Summer program will introduce students to bioscience through interesting activities that include building models of plant and animal cells, using magnifying glasses to examine everyday things up close and microscopes to look inside the cells of plants and animals. They will learn about bacteria and find out why some bacteria are helpful and others are harmful. A parent or guardian must come in person to fill out and sign the registration form for his/her child. Children must be able to attend both days. (Aug. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. until noon) GSK Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in partnership with community-based organizations. Meet in the lobby of the Finksburg Branch to go with a group to Sandymount Park where we will be visiting all six of the PokeStops at the park and placing lures out on two stops. If you do two loops around the park, it's about a mile walk. This will be a great opportunity to catch some Pokemon, talk tips, and hatch some eggs you have in the incubator. Afterwards, you can go back to the library and battle at our PokeGym. Refreshments will be served. In the case of questionable weather, please call the branch.

'Orphan #8' author Kim Alkemade

2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7. Eldersburg branch. Ages 13-adult. "Orphan #8" Author Kim van Alkemade will be speaking at this Celebrating America program. Kim van Alkemade is the author of the historical fiction novel "Orphan #8" and her creative nonfiction essays have appeared in literary journals including Alaska Quarterly Review, CutBank, and So To Speak. Many of the characters and events in "Orphan #8" were inspired by her family history. Books will be available for purchase and signing. All attendees need to register..
