Carroll County Public Library schedules (March 2-8)

Several branches of the Carroll County Public Library will help celebrate the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ birth this week, with a Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss event planned at the Eldersburg branch on Thursday.

Geometric Objects: 2 p.m. For ages 8-adults. Join local mathematician and inventor Jan Smid to explore the amazing properties of geometric objects, like dodecahedrons. Learn how to make them using simple materials, like straws and milk cartons, in this hands-on workshop. All attendees need to register.

Everything That Grows: Spring Art Reception: 2 p.m. For all ages. The Gallery at Eldersburg Branch Library will be featuring local artists' work with the spring theme of Everything That Grows. View the art on display, meet the artists, and inquire about purchases. The spring show pieces will be on display from March through May. Harp music will be performed by Elaine Bryant. Refreshments will be from Once Upon a Crumb. Refreshments will be served.

In the spirit of Rube Goldberg, a cartoonist and inventor known for his comically complicated machines, we have been keeping laughter and invention alive at our branches this winter. Middle and high school students have created contraptions with the end goal of placing coins into a container. We invite the public to view these hilarious creations with live demonstrations.

Knit Wits: 7 p.m. For ages 11-adults. Beginners, please bring a light-colored, worsted yarn and size 8 needles to the class. If you know how to knit, please come and bring your project.

They perform exclusively unaccompanied vocal music, primarily Renaissance madrigals, but also including a good variety of world music as well. Most recently they sang at the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and on the Millennium Stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. All attendees need to register.

We also will cover the Medicare Savings Programs, which are not all low-income programs. Presented by Carroll County's SHIP/SMP program.

Cool, Calm, and Collected: 7 p.m. For adults. We rush, rush, rush from place to place while trying to keep up with home, school, work, and social obligations. It can be exhausting and causes our stress levels to rise. Most of us experience this as anxiety, irritability, muscle tension, sleeplessness, depression, or, if left untended, other serious health problems. Come and spend an evening with Elaine Malcolm, M.A. and learn about resilience-what it is, how it's created and nurtured, and ways to minimize the negative effects of an overworked stress response.

Medicare 102: 5 p.m. For adults. Are you or someone you care about eligible for Medicare? Come and find out how to get the most out of your Medicare health benefits. Medicare 102 covers the four parts of Medicare with a special focus on the Medigap plans. Learn about the different Medigap plans and your period of guaranteed issue rights. These secondary/supplemental plans can cover the deductibles and coinsurances not covered by Medicare. We will cover the Medicare Savings Programs (not all programs are low-income programs!) and healthcare fraud. Presented by Carroll County's SHIP/SMP program.
