Deer Park United Methodist Church, at 2205 Sykesville Road, Smallwood, will observe "Holy Humor Sunday" at 8:30 and 11 a.m. April 12.

An old Easter custom begun in the early centuries of Christianity was "Bright Sunday," a laughter-filled celebration of Jesus' resurrection on the Sunday after Easter: It was a custom "rooted in the musings of early church theologians that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead," according to a church press release.

Some churches have revived the custom by offering "Holy Humor Sunday" services and programs.

Deer Park UMC will continue this tradition, with the theme this year of "Hats off to the Lord!" Expressions of Easter joy will be accompanied by lighthearted music, jokes and skits.

Those attending are being encouraged to "wear a smile, your brightest colors, and especially a funny hat — or any hat you'd like to wear, even an Easter hat."
