Irish heritage celebrated with selection of St. Patrick's Day events

Folks wanting to participate in the celebration of St. Patrick's Day can wake up at the top o' the morning on Saturday for an entire day Irish pride and community events. The day will feature a number of activities as part of Westminster's Celtic Canter and Downtown Irish Celebration, a concert of percussive Irish dance, and an opportunity to relax with some St. Patrick's Day-themed tea at the Farm Museum.

Celtic Canter 5K and Downtown Irish Celebration

This 5K is held annually in Westminster to support the Carroll County Children's Fund, Access Carroll and Target Community and Educational Services. The race begins at 9a.m. at the corner of Green Street and Bond Street in Westminster. In addition to the 5K, there will be a Leprechaun Chase 1-mile fun run at 10 a.m. for children 10 and younger. Starting at 10 a.m. is the downtown Westminster Irish Celebration. The event will feature Celtic music and dance, demonstrations, vendors and discounts and specials at restaurants throughout Westminster. The library will host children's activities including crafts, face painting, a caber toss, stone put, hammer throw, balloon art and more. After the race, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be the annual pub crawl, including Westminster bars Artisan Wine Company, O'Lordans, Maggie's, Birdie's, Paradiso, Rafael's and Johanssons. A complimentary continuous trolley will be provided for those participating in the crawl.

Teelin' Irish Dance Company

This group of performers from Howard County brings together the history of percussive Irish dance with modern choreography. The troupe, established in 2001, performs at the Carroll Art Center every March in honor of St. Patrick's Day. In 2009, director Maureen Gately won the Individual Artist award for Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council for her work with the dance company.

St. Patrick's Day Tea

The Carroll County Farm Museum will host this tea party daily from Saturday until St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday, March 17. The event will feature Irish-themed tea, museum admission and a farmhouse tour. The Carroll Tea Room in the historic farm house has been recently remodeled, and the event will feature teas paired with a variety of savory and sweet snacks.
