Carroll Countians will have their choice of high culture to experience this week, from the Baroque composer masters, to modern concertos and the ever-popular Shakespeare. This week's artistic offerings will have you feeling cultured and sophisticated.
County Masterworks Chorale
The Carroll County Masterworks Chorale will host their annual fall concert "Baroque Beginnings: From Palestrina to Praetorius" Sunday at McDaniel College's Baker Memorial Chapel. The event will feature "Kyrie" from Italian Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's work Pope Marcellus Mass, a selection of polychoral works from German composer Michael Praetorius as well as pieces by Tomas Luis de Vittoria, Thomas Tallis and others.
The Masterworks Chorale works to bring the music of the greatest composers to Carroll County. In the past, they have performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Georgetown University Orchestra and Choir.
Palestrina's work is best known for his dynamic style of 16th century church music, while Praetorius' work is defined by the polychoral style of singing in alternation. The Praetorius numbers will include members of the McDaniel College Choir.

Midsummer Night's Dream
The drama department at McDaniel College will present William Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream," directed by Elizabeth van den Berg, from Wednesday to Saturday at WMC Alumni Hall. The play features magic, fairies, amateur actors and that Shakespeare structure and language. The story follows four young lovers who meet with a group of young actors who are controlled by the playful fairies of the forest.

Student Chamber Music Ensembles and Student Solo Performance
McDaniel College is hosting back-to-back student performances with the one-two punch of Student Chamber Music Ensembles on Thursday and Student Solo Recital on Friday. The ensembles concert will feature performances by the flute choir, flute quartet and woodwind quintet, while the solo recital will feature a variety of vocal and instrumental soloists performing a wide selection of music, from classical to contemporary.
