Within the Introduction of "A Course in Miracles," by Helen Schucman, we read that we have free will, that "the opposite of Love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite." What is all-encompassing is God! Our "fear," then, is a disbelief that God will take care of us no matter what — that even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death we shall not fear any harm, for God is with us (Psalm 23). Psalm 27.1 tells us God is the stronghold of our lives — of whom shall we fear? (2 Timothy 1:7) — tells us God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of Love and of self-discipline.
