We hear a lot of talk today about things being free. I think the longer we live we realize that nothing in life is free. There almost always seems to be a cost attached.

The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8,9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

For something to be truly free there should be no work involved, it is simply given to us. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

God gave us Jesus Christ as a free gift that once we accept the gift, we are granted eternal life. What better gift could there possibly be? All the riches in the world pale in comparison to being given the power to live forever in Heaven in the presence of Almighty God.

True freedom in this life does not simply exist in things. It’s great to have things, but often things have us. We are given all these promises yet many today stay depressed, discouraged and have many issues. It seems at times that those with the most things are the most depressed and dysfunctional among us.

We need to get back to what really matters in life. The simple life is not always lacking in good things. We can have riches and still live with peace if we have our priorities straight.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” What things? All the good things we seek in life. Houses, cars, good jobs, good food to eat, loving family and friends, etc. God wants us to have things, the problem is when things have us.

That’s why we are to seek God first in our lives. We need to put more emphasis on the spiritual. We have little or no lack in America for good things. We are truly a blessed nation. What America needs is for us to thank God for our blessings and to accept the gift of His son for our sins.

As I have said for many years now, I believe we are on the verge of a great spiritual awakening in America and around the world. Great spiritual awakenings of the past have always come out of times of great confusion and chaos. We see this all around the world now. When men and women run out of answers they will drop to their knees and pray. Let’s hope this takes place sooner than later. The world needs answers. Just adding more things to our life is not the answer.

The good news is that God likes to work best in chaos. The Bible says that “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1,2)

The world is getting to be a darker place by the day. Get ready for the Spirit of God to hover over us once again and bring a great light.
