Emmanuel (Baust) volunteers talk of Mission Trip
Six people from Emmanuel (Baust) United Church of Christ participated in a Mission Trip in Northfork, West Virginia, Aug. 13-18, and gave a presentation during the morning worship on Sunday, Sept. 17.
When the local coal mines were operating at full capacity, Northfork had many elegant homes and over 18,000 residents. It was one of the wealthiest town, per capita, in the nation. Today most of Northfork's homes stand in ruin. The population has dropped to 429, as of the 2010 census, and poverty is rampant. The coal mines are owned by Russians and many are not operating. All the wealth is gone and so are the jobs. Those laborers who were not able to leave have little or no opportunity to work.
The church is located at 2950 Old Taneytown Road in Tyrone. Adult Sunday School classes are at 9 a.m. and worship is at 10 a.m. For more information email email@example.com or call 410 751-1237.
