West Carroll: Teacher leading archaeological dig for kids in New Windsor; Mayberry Day Picnic upcoming

Want to try something new and exciting? New Windsor Heritage Committee member and teacher Lisa Macurak has been conducting archaeological digs in the New Windsor area over the summer.

The last dig for this season is slated for this Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon.


All students, ages 11 and older, are welcome to participate. Preregister by emailing Macurak at no later than noon on Friday, Aug. 16.

Macurak said, “Closed-toes shoes are a must and they should bring dish-washing gloves and come expecting to get muddy as we are digging in the area of an active spring.”

Items typically found include pieces of pottery, glass, and buttons. An adult will have to accompany participants and sign a permission slip upon arrival. For more information, contact Macurak at

Antique car show, festival

Emmanuel Baust United Church of Christ, at 2950 Old Taneytown Road in Tyrone, will host the annual Antique Car and Tractor Show and Peach Festival on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Vehicles must be registered. Pre-registration, due by Aug. 19, is just $5. Registration the day of the show is $8.

There will be games and activities for all ages. Check out the variety of food, baked goods, vendors, and of course peaches and ice cream.

Annual Mayberry Day Picnic

The annual Mayberry Day Picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Mayberry Mill, at 3001 East Mayberry Road. Festivities start at 1 p.m. Fried chicken will be served at 1:30 p.m.

Bring your favorite side dish to share (salads, vegetable dishes, casseroles), drinks for your family, and chairs to relax in. Please note, paper goods will be provided but drinks will not.

If you have photos and memorabilia of Mayberry, bring them along to display. History of the Mayberry School and the Mayberry church will be presented. If you have photos or stories of either subject, please share!

New Windsor fire company to sponsor Crab Feed

The engine bay of the New Windsor fire company is the place to be Saturday, Sept. 21, when the fire company sponsors an all-you-can-eat crab feed from 5 to 8 p.m.

The menu includes steamed crabs, fried chicken, hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob, crab soup, beer, soda and more. Tickets are $45 each.

Festival to benefit Sober Truth

National Recovery Month Festival will benefit Sober Truth Substance Abuse Treatment Program, on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The focus of Sober Truth is to provide help to the individuals suffering from the effects of addiction. They utilize evidence-based treatment interventions, which enable clients to discover their purpose in life. The program facilitators are licensed professional clinicians providing individual, family and group counseling.

Over the Hill Gang community service project to benefit Taneytown schools

The Taneytown Lorien residents of the Over the Hill Gang are working on another community service project to benefit students attending Taneytown school.

They are reaching out the community seeking donations of school supplies to fill backpacks for students in need.

Items most needed include #2 pencils, highlighters in pink, green and yellow, eight-packs of large crayons, large pink erasers, glue sticks wide-ruled composition books, and pencil cases (three holes).

FSK Athletic Boosters golf tournament

Don’t forget to sign up for the ninth annual Francis Scott Key High School Athletic Boosters golf tournament, which will be held at The Links at Gettysburg on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Check-in starts at 12:30 p.m., and the tournament starts at 1:30 p.m. The fee is $90 per golfer, and the registration deadline is Aug. 24.

Sponsorships are also available at several levels, including hole sponsorships, Red, White, and Blue, with or without a team of golfers.
