“It’s just 100 percent fun,” said Karen Hilderbrand, Spotlight Musical Theatre’s owner and executive producer. “It’s a very high energy show and there’s non-stop music and dancing.”

The Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.

Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, according to a synopsis on the Music Theatre International website.

Hiderbrand said actors’ ages range from 9 to 16. She said the actors chose the production themselves through a ballot process.

Eleven-year-old Kyla Mendez, who plays Mrs. Mayor, said the musical is “fun for all ages.”

“There’s a really good message,” said Kyla, of Mount Airy. “It teaches people that everyone should care for one another.”

“If you have children you should definitely bring them. They’ll think it’s the best play they’ve ever seen,” said 12-year-old Gracie Ray, who plays Jojo the Who.

Gracie, of Mount Airy, said there’s more singing than talking, the songs are funny and there’s lots of rhyming.

Thirteen-year-old Christian Ryder, who plays Mr. Mayor and Jojo the Who, said: “All of the things that you can imagine from Dr. Seuss’s books come to life on stage.”

“It's really captivating because there are many different events going on at the same time,” said Christian, of Mount Airy. “We’re telling a few different stories at once.”

Fourteen-year-old Camden Roach, who plays Horton the Elephant, said “the sets are like playgrounds and the costumes are colorful.”

Camden, of Mount Airy, described the play as “sillier than most plays.”

“It’s definitely whimsical. It puts animals in unbelievable situations,” Camden said.
