The Carroll County Farmers Market will hold its Easter Show on Saturday, March 31. McDaniel College’s Juried Undergraduate Exhibition

The annual Kathryn E. Wentz Juried Undergraduate Exhibition highlights the best artwork by McDaniel College’s undergraduate students this April. The exhibition runs Tuesday, April 3, through Friday, April 13, in Peterson Hall’s Rice Gallery. An opening reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, with a gallery talk at 6 p.m. The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public.

According to a McDaniel news release, all students in the college’s department of art and art history are invited to submit up to five pieces of art that they have done while studying at McDaniel for inclusion in the exhibition. Eight award winners will be chosen for first, second and third places, as well as three honorable mentions, a Best in Show and a Foundations award that is open to work done in Drawing One (Perceptual Drawing and Design). The awards are announced during the opening reception.

When: Opening reception 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, with a gallery talk at 6 p.m. Rice Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Main Street Heat Chili Cook-off

Mount Airy’s annual chili cook-off will return to Main Street on Saturday, April 7. Beginning at 10 a.m., more than 20 regional competitors will be setting up their tents and cook plates vying to earn the prestigious honor of representing Maryland in the International ICS competition in October. The street will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

According to a Mount Airy Main Street Association press release, tasting kits can be purchased from the event’s information booth, located near the old train station at noon. The $5 tasting kit enables the holder to obtain chili samples from the competitors once their entry is turned in for competition. The salsa will be judged at noon, the green chili at 1 p.m. and the red chili at 2 p.m. The winners will be announced at 4 p.m. With each first place win comes the honor of competing at the world competition in October.

The beer tent will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sanctioned cornhole competition will begin at 11 a.m. in the rail yard. During the chili cook-off, visitors can park free of charge at the Firemen’s Carnival grounds, located at 1008 Twin Arch Road. A bus will provide free transportation to the downtown area from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
