Five suggestions for New Year's celebrations

Different folks enjoy different types of New Year's Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations. There are too many to list them all, but here are five ways to celebrate in Carroll.

1. Get to bed early

For little ones who might be low on energy by the time midnight rolls around, branches of the Carroll County Public Library will be celebrating at noon on New Year’s Eve.


Games, crafts and refreshments will be available as kids count down to noon. Activities start at 11 a.m.

Participating branches include: the Eldersburg Branch, 6400 Hemlock Drive, Eldersburg in the large meeting room; the Mount Airy Branch, 705 Ridge Avenue, Mount Airy in the large meeting room; the North Carroll Branch, 2255 Hanover Pike, Hampstead in the large meeting room; the Westminster Branch, 50 East Main Street, Westminster in the large meeting room.

2. Get dressed up

Antrim 1844, 30 Trevanion Road, Taneytown will host a New Year’s Eve Gala starting at 7 p.m. The evening includes a seven-course meal accompanied by piano music followed by dancing on the Veranda Toast the new year with champagne accompanied by “Auld Lang Syne” performed by a Scottish bagpiper. Tickets are $175 per person with $60 per person for an optional wine pairing. More information is available at

Martin’s Westminster will host their annual New Year's Eve Celebration beginning at 9 p.m. Guests can enjoy a buffet and open bar while listening to live music from the band First Class. The new year will pop off with a midnight champagne toast. This celebration is for adults age 21 and over. The venue is located in the 140 Village Shopping Center at the intersection of Md. 140 & 97. 3. Get in a groove

The Stables Restaurant will host their annual NYE Celebration with live music from the band Never Never. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner is served between 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person without dinner or $55 per person with one of six dinner choices included and champagne at midnight. 4. Get something good to eat

The County Cork Wine Pub, 1716 Liberty Road, Eldersburg, will begin their New Year’s Eve Party at 3 p.m. and run till 1 a.m. Guests can enjoy a three-course meal with a choice of five entree’s as well as drink specials. Memories Charcoal House, 403 E Ridgeville Blvd, Mount Airy, will start the celebration with live music by Timmy Mo 3-6 p.m. during their New Years Eve Happy Hour. Later in the evening, bring your best costume to the Masquerade New Years Eve Party beginning at 9 p.m. complete with dinner, drinks and dancing. 5. Get out in nature

State parks across Maryland will be hosting First Day Hikes on Jan. 1.

The Patapsco Valley State Park hike, which will cover parts of the Spring Glen, Tall Poplar and Switchback Trails, starts out at 11 a.m. at at Shelter 501 at the McKeldin Area. For GPS directions, go to 11676 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville.

Hikers should wear weather appropriate clothes and boots and bring drinking water. The organizers list the hike as 2.5 miles long with a moderate difficulty. It’s expected to go about 2 and a half hours.
