Summer has finally arrived in Carroll County, and residents and visitors may be looking for a way to beat the heat. One way to stay cool is to come by and see what the Carroll County Arts Council has to offer.
Located in the Carroll Arts Center on Main Street in Westminster, the Arts Council presents live performances, movies, art exhibits, classes and summer camps. If you haven’t been here, or haven’t been here in a while, I invite you to find a program that interests you at www.carrollcountyartscouncil.org.
Attention all film lovers! On Friday, July 13, our friends at FLICC (Film Lovers In Carroll County) present two showings of the award-winning movie “Lady Bird.” A modern, coming-of-age story about a unique 17-year-old girl in Sacramento, this brilliantly acted and directed film richly explores many familiar themes and experiences that shape young people as they journey to adulthood.
Nominated for five Academy Awards and winner of the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Actress, this movie breaks the mold for coming-of-age stories. “Lady Bird” plays Friday at 1 p.m. (with captions) and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are just $7 for adults and $6 for ages 60-plus and 25 and under. Remember, Arts Council members get 10 percent off the ticket price.
If you’re looking for something to do with the family, check out our Summer Family Movie series, sponsored by Ting. Every Tuesday night through Aug. 7, we are offering free movies appropriate for all ages. Bring the kids this Tuesday, July 17, for “Ferdinand.” This animated gem is sponsored by Cultivated in Westminster. All movies in the series begin at 7 p.m. and are free to the public. Popcorn, candy and soft drinks can be purchased at our concession stand. For the complete schedule, visit our website at www.carrollcountyartscouncil.org.
If you’re a live music fan, mark July 21 on your calendar! That Saturday night, the indescribable Cheryl Wheeler graces our stage. This singer, songwriter, comedian and social pundit delights her audience with her incredible voice, story-telling panache and fantastic sense of humor. She is highly respected as a songwriter by her peers and adored by her loyal fans. Tickets are $24 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, and CCAC members get 10 percent off. Wheeler is an Arts Council favorite, so don’t wait to get your tickets.
The next day, July 22, you can enjoy the sounds of the 1930s and ’40s as we welcome back Blue Moon Big Band to celebrate their 20th anniversary by playing all 20 new songs from their upcoming CD, as well as many classic favorites. From jumpin’ and jivin’ to romantic elegance, the band performs jazz standards with authenticity and excitement. The concert begins at 4 p.m. and tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors and students.
With all the busy-ness of summertime, take a break and surround yourself with the peaceful beauty in our galleries. Through Aug. 3, we are featuring our 16th annual Members Show, highlighting the talent of our Carroll County artists. Come stroll through our three galleries and enjoy the creativity of our friends and neighbors. All the artwork is for sale, so come and support our local art community.
Are you ready for a change in your décor? Are you tired of the artwork on your walls? Consider donating to our sixth annual yART Sale. This fundraiser features previously enjoyed art at yard sale prices! We will start taking your donations on Saturday, Aug. 11, so start looking around for what you can give away.
Of course, when you give stuff away, it means you have to buy more stuff. Find some amazing deals at the yART Sale, Aug. 18 and 19. Shop hundreds of works, including paintings, prints, drawings and photographs, as well as frames, art books and supplies, to find that new-to-you treasure that you can’t live without.
