Many Carroll County residents will certainly be familiar with the Carroll Arts Center, prominently located on Main Street in Westminster. For the past 15 years, the Carroll County Arts Council has run this community gem, with the generous support of the City of Westminster and the county’s Department of Recreation and Parks.

I am a newcomer to the area, but the beautifully restored building drew my attention on my very first visit to town last December. It was the facade itself that led me to Google it, see the job posting for a new Executive Director, apply, and be chosen, to replace beloved former-Executive Director Sandy Oxx in the top role at the Arts Council. I have been asked many times what I’m going to change. From my perspective, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Long-time patrons of the Carroll Arts Center will continue to enjoy their favorite performers, exhibits, and events, as well as classes and lectures. If you haven’t yet become a member or patron of this Carroll County institution, I invite you to attend one of our wide variety of programs and exhibits.

Now playing

Our theater is a great place to come in out of the heat and spend time with the family. Every Tuesday night through Aug. 7, we are offering Free Family Movies. Bring the kids and enjoy everything from current favorites like “Ferdinand” and “Captain Underpants” to classics like “The Sound of Music.” All movies in the series begin at 7 p.m. and are free to the public. Popcorn, candy and soft drinks can be purchased at our concession stand. For the complete schedule, visit our website at

Live music fans can check out the concerts we have lined up. This Saturday night, come see the Back Pages Band, a crowd favorite at the Maryland Wine Festival. This group returns to our stage to present a dynamic tribute to rock’s “Golden Age” (1963-1973). You’ll enjoy hits by The Beach Boys, Bee Gees, The Monkees, The Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffet, to name a few.

Two weeks later, on July 21, the indescribable Cheryl Wheeler will grace our stage. This singer, songwriter, comedian, and social pundit delights her audience with her incredible voice. A natural story teller with a fantastic sense of humor, she is highly respected as a songwriter by her peers and adored by her loyal fans.

The next day, reminisce on the 1930s and 40s as we welcome back Blue Moon Big Band to celebrate their 20th anniversary by playing all 20 new songs from their upcoming album, as well as many classic favorites. From jumpin’ and jivin’ to romantic elegance, the band performs jazz standards with authenticity and excitement.
