Looking for an opportunity to dance the night away? The Pipe Creek Civil War Roundtable will host a Corbit’s Charge Dance on Saturday, April 7. Dancing begins at 7 p.m. in the city of Westminster’s Recreation and Parks Family Fitness Center Gymnasium.
“There’s a lot of flair and class to the dances,” said Steven Carney, a member of the Pipe Creek Civil War Roundtable. “If you picture a ball, that is kind of what you’re going to see. People will be dressed in very fine outfits and moving around like it’s a Disney movie.”
Carney said proceeds from the dance benefit the organization’s June Corbit’s Charge event. The evening will also feature a silent auction, door prizes and raffle prizes.
“Our mission is to educate people on Carroll County’s Civil War history. This dance is a big part of our preservation efforts,” he said. “The music will be Civil War-era music and you ’ll have a chance to see what kind of dances they were doing back then.”
Carney said everyone is welcome and the evening is set up so “someone with absolutely no experience can come in and have a really good time.”
“Callers teach the dances before everyone does it,” he explained.
Corbit’s Charge Dance chairwoman Victoria Koslak agreed.
“The best thing is that it’s designed for beginners,” she said. “It’s organized so that someone that’s never done this before can still enjoy the dance. You learn step by step and walk through them and then they put on the music.”
Koslak said there’s no pressure to try to “be Civil War period correct.”
“You can wear a dress from any era and gentlemen can wear regular suits,” she explained.
“Period attire is admired but never required,” added dance committee member Sherry Hartman. “We just want people to enjoy themselves.”
Hartman said the dance committee members do their best to really bring people into the group.
“You don’t have to have a partner,” she explained. “The dances are similar to country line dances and square dances. The callers will walk you right through steps. It’s a little bit like a game of Simon Says.”
There is a $2 discount for purchasing tickets online but they can also be purchased at the door. Swords, spurs, heel plates and firearms are prohibited from the city of Westminster Recreation and Parks Family Fitness Center Gymnasium.
