Dr. Michael J. Gilsdorf, of Sykesville, was selected by the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine for its 2015 Alumni Recognition Award, presented during the annual convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association in Boston, Mass., on July 13. The award is given to veterinarians whose careers have served as role models for future alumni in a professional and community setting.
Gilsdorf earned a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1972 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1974, both from Kansas State University. In 1981, he was awarded a Master's in Veterinary Microbiology from Iowa State University. He gained experience in all aspects of regulatory medicine with the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's Veterinary Services, and is currently executive vice president of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians in Washington, D.C.
Gilsdorf has been a member of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians since April 1983, serving on the board of directors and as president. He has been a member of the United States Animal Health Association since the mid-1980s, has received several awards from the USDA, and is a member of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Scientists, Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians and American Association of Public Health Veterinarians.
