McDaniel College students Jacqueline Yarwaye, Eldersburg, freshman; Grace Kohn, Finksburg, freshman; Arielle Jochum, Hampstead, junior; and Kenny Baquol, Taneytown, senior, performed in the annual College Choir concert, held April 24 at the college.
The following local senior cinema majors, of Westminster, were among students who premiered their original films at McDaniel College's VideoPalooza, an annual showcase of student-produced digital features, held May 4-5 at the college. The students wrote, directed, produced and edited their films, which are all about 20 minutes in length. Luke Fisher, "Magic in the Trees," a documentary exploring social ramifications of deforestation of Amazon jungle and what we would lose in a world without it. Margaret Heller, "In This Time," and art, about Rose Sanders, who learns that she has the ability to time travel, and that with each travel there are consequences that could lead to serious changes. Nikola Tzenov, "Angela's Song," about Angela, who turns to songwriting and the support of her bandmates after her life seemingly crumbles around her.
Sierra Lindsey, of Eldersburg, recently participated in the University of Findlay's 2016 Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity. Held on the campus, in Findlay, Ohio, undergraduate and graduate students were given the opportunity to share their research, creativity and professional learning experiences with the university and community.
Tyler Hood, Hood College, from Mount Airy, was elected to serve as lieutenant governor for 2016-2017; and Ashley Ellis, University of Maryland, College Park, from Mount Airy, was elected secretary of state for 2016-2017 during the 27th Annual Session of the Maryland Student Legislature, held April 29 through May 1 at the Historic Maryland State House in Annapolis. The educational non-profit organization allows students from nine Maryland universities and colleges to write, research and debate issues of local, state, and national importance; and become educated on the legislative process including developing skills in parliamentary procedure, researching and drafting legislation, and understanding the organizational structure of leadership. Throughout the academic year, students participate in legislative sessions culminating with the Annual Session.
