Stop by this informative and important display to see and hear about common household items you may have in your house that look harmless but are really poisonous. Learn how to minimize the risks for your family from Extension Educator, Dr. Virginia Brown.

Summer Reading Kick-Off with Merritt Athletic Club: 10 a.m. For all ages. Join Merritt Athletic Club's staff as we bring movement, crafts and games to the summer reading tradition. Don't leave before noon so that you can have time for a family movement class to end the festivities on a high note. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Babysitting Workshop: 1 p.m. For ages 12-17. Registration required. Come join us for a three day workshop (6/22, 6/23, 6/24) designed to build your babysitting skills. We will also talk about child safety, building first aid kits, and sharing activities to play with youth. Finally, participants will test their skills with a written test and a hands-on trial. Participants will be awarded a certificate upon completion of all three days of this workshop. This workshop does not offer CPR/first aid training.

Meet Author Lois Szymanski and a Chincoteague Pony: 1 p.m. For ages 7-adults. Join author Lois Szymanski as she shares stories about the famous wild Chincoteague ponies and the Assateague wetlands where they live. Szymanski will discuss the inspirations for her books "Wild Colt," "The True Story of Miracle Man," "The True Story of Seafeather," and "The True Story of Quintilius." After the talk, visitors will be able to meet a real Chincoteague pony and ask questions of the pony's owner. This will be a great experience for the entire family. All attendees need to register.

This free 30-minute group class will instruct children in the basics of violin playing (instrument hold, bow hold, rhythms, basic instrument care, etc.). Lula's Letter: A Child's Story: 10 a.m. For ages 11-15. Register for this event. Explore the importance of letters to and from the home front during the American Civil War era. Attempt to transcribe a document from the period and try your hand at writing with ink and a dip pen. A Celebrating America program.

Socks 101: 11 a.m. For adults. Register for this event. Have you always wanted to knit socks, but never had the courage to try? Well now you can. If you are a knitter who can follow instructions, join us to learn how to knit your very own socks. You will be using a super simple sock pattern, with some help from us, to knit a basic sock. Supplies needed: set of five double pointed needles size 4 or 5, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and approximately 450 yards of sport weight yarn (a 2 or 3 on the yarn label).

Pajama Party Storytime: Cows: 7 p.m. For all ages. Wear your pajamas, bring your favorite stuffed animal, and listen to stories before bed. This storytime, open to all ages, introduces stories through books, songs, and activities. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Wednesday

Twos and Threes Together: Cows: 10 a.m. For ages 2-3, with accompanying caregiver. This lively, fast-paced storytime for young children includes books, songs, fingerplays, and movement.

Read and Play: 11 a.m. For ages birth-24 months, with accompanying caregiver. Join your little one at a storytime featuring interactive books, rhymes, music, and movement, followed by playgroup activities which allow children to practice skills and socialize.

Fire Truck Visit

11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, Mount Airy branch. For all ages. Come meet local heroes from the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company. We will have a brief storytime, a presentation from the fire fighters, and see a fire truck up close. Don't forget your cameras. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. A Celebrating America program. Only kids need to register.

Pre-Twinkle Violin Class Demo

2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, Westminster branch; 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, Taneytown branch. For ages 2-6. Come to a free violin class at the library. We are offering a free 30-minute group class that will instruct children in the basics of violin playing (instrument hold, bow hold, rhythms, basic instrument care, etc.). Children will have a chance to jam along with Ms. Glenda on real violins. Questions will be answered at the end of the class regarding the Suzuki method, how to find an instrument, and about the Pre-Twinkle program at Westminster Suzuki Strings. Only kids need to register. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Water Balloon Wednesdays

2 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, Finksburg branch. For ages 7-17. Is summer vacation too hot to handle? Cool off with Water Balloon Wednesdays at the Finksburg Branch. Come prepared to make a splash. Program is weather permitting.
