Gerstell Academy's Class of 2015 looks to future

Fourteen students received their high school diplomas during Gerstell Academy's fourth commencement ceremony held Thursday at the preparatory school's Finksburg campus.

All 14 plan to attend a four-year institutions in the fall, according to information provided by Mary Louque, director of admissions and assistant to the president.


Students in Gerstell's class of 2015 expect to attend schools including: University of Alabama, Arizona State University, Guilford College, High Point University, James Madison University, John Carroll University, Liberty University, Mercyhurst University, Mount St. Mary's University, North Carolina Wesleyan College and University of Maryland, College Park.

Jenna Marcus, valedictorian, said during her address at the ceremony she will attend the honors program at College Park in the fall.


Former Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick, who retired in 2011, was commencement speaker. Nicholas Wilson, president of the Gerstell Academy Student Government, also spoke.

Jacob Betz received the Gary E. Slyman Leadership "Scholar" Award from the founder and president of Gerstell Frederick G. Smith in honor of Gary Slyman, head of the upper school, who is leaving Gerstell. Betz also received the Norm Smith Leadership Award.
