Mount Airy Middle School kicked off the school year by inviting guest speaker Dinambi Butler to address students. On Sept. 12, Butler, a fitness instructor and national reserve military police officer, shared his own experience as a homeless student in middle school and how this empowered him to show character, focus on academics, and demonstrate citizenship in the community. These three traits are the basis of Mount Airy Middle School's vision and Tradition of Excellence. Students received a Mount Airy water bottle after the assembly, and the "message in the bottle" was a copy of the school's vision statement. Students will now participate in a contest to design the school's "vision T-shirt," which students earn for showing character, academic achievement, and citizenship. When they wear the shirts in Mount Airy, many local businesses offer discounts on services to the students.
