Andrew Miner, of Sykesville, is a member of the Leadership Scholars Program at John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio. The program is focused on developing student leaders of remarkable character who seek to become agents for transformative change on campus and in their future professions and communities. Those who are chosen for the program receive the Leadership Scholars Award, a $5,000 annually renewable scholarship. In order to be considered for the program, students must demonstrate a clear desire to continue learning about leadership and meet academic requirements. Miner is a graduate of Liberty High School.
Wolfgang Kahan, of Mount Airy, a student at McDaniel College, performs in the Student African Percussion Ensemble on Nov. 30, at Decker Center Forum at McDaniel College. This is the premiere performance of the group, which is under the direction of McDaniel music faculty member Pape Demba "Paco" Samb, a Senegalese griot. The event also features the Super Ngewel African Drum and Dance Ensemble, performing traditional Senegalese rhythms on authentic handmade instruments while incorporating dance and storytelling.
