McDaniel College commencement speakers announced

McDaniel College has announced details for this spring semester’s commencement ceremonies, including the speakers.

The ceremonies will be on Saturday, May 25, with the undergraduate ceremony at 3 p.m. and — in a change this year — the graduate ceremony at 9 a.m. More than 600 degrees in total will be awarded, according to a news release from the college.

The speaker for the graduate ceremony is former McDaniel College President Joan Develin Coley, the college’s first female president and the first to be promoted from the faculty ranks, according to the news release. Coley, president emerita, served the college in a variety of roles for nearly four decades.

The speaker for the undergraduate ceremony is Carroll County philanthropist Martin K.P. Hill, president of Woodhaven Building and Development Inc. Hill, a member of the college’s board of trustees for 26 years, is stepping down as the board chair.

Graduate students will assemble at 8 a.m. at Baker Memorial Chapel or, in case of rain, Old Gill Gym. Their procession to Gill Center will start at 8:45. Undergraduate students will assemble at Baker Memorial Chapel at 1:30 p.m. — or Old Gill Gym in case of rain — before processing to Gill Center at 2:45.

After the undergraduate ceremony, graduates will be able to ring the Old Main bell in Memorial Plaza.
