Career and Tech carpentry program receives award

The Carpentry program at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center has received the Outstanding Career and Technology Education Program – Secondary Award presented by the Maryland State Department of Education's Division of Career and College Readiness. The award recognizes business partners, teachers, and others who are creating opportunities for students to prepare for careers and further education. The honorees sponsor internships, mentor students as they complete real-world projects, and create Maryland's high-skilled future workforce.

Jon Mersinger, instructor in the carpentry program at the Career and Technology Center, has more than 30 years in the carpentry field and is a master carpenter with residential and commercial construction experience. The carpentry program is a model for the state-adopted program utilizing the National Center for Construction Education Research curriculum and sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors Cumberland Valley Chapter. The course includes all aspects of construction, from vacant lot to the finished product, with emphasis placed on coordination between vendors and other trades people who supply services needed at a site for a completed project; and also includes estimating prices relating to consumers and trades. All carpentry students also participate in the OSHA 10 safety certification program in addition to NCCER Core, Carpentry Level I, and Carpentry Level II.
