I returned in 2009 with a little more race experience and a chronic case of plantar fasciitis. My run training had been sub-par that season and I'd just completed two months of physical therapy to no avail. Worse, I experienced a brief but terrifying panic-attack in the water. Unable to breathe and convinced my wetsuit was choking me, I tried to strip off the offending neoprene only to have it fill with water, weighing me down. I managed, somehow, to calm down, zip my suit and carry on, finishing the race three minutes faster than the year before. Apparently, experience has the power to trump both injury and panic.
